Merry Christmas!

This is the busiest time of year by far for us. Out of the five of us, three have birthdays between Thanksgiving and Christmas!! I'm always amazed when we survive December. I officially now have a teenager and my baby is now 8 years old. Where did the time go? Highlights of the season for us were a fabulous choir concert and a second grade play where my son got to play Santa. Those will be some fun memories. I hope you are making some wonderful memories of your own this season. Merry Christmas everyone!!

Happy Holidays!

I'm, pretty horrible about getting things done on time, so this may be the only Christmas greeting I manage to send. (Hey, it took me 21 years to get this out out, so you do the math!)

If so, please know that the summer of 87 was special to me because it showed me that I could be anything I wanted to be, and you each had a part in driving that point home. Reconnecting with you all has been like a chance to return to that same energizing point and to realize that I can still be anything I want to be.

Thanks for being the cool people you are.

Best to you and yours!

Pictures from Jeff and Family

Janet sent me these cute pics from Jeff and his clan:

Cheryl Godfrey - Burton

Okay, I'm finally making my post. Took me long enough, eh? Since our fateful summer in '87 I've done a few things . . . . certainly hasn't been as exciting as some of you though!! After high school graduation I attended Boise State (Go Broncos!!) and earned my BA in English with a minor in music in '93. I married Ryan Burton in '91 and we've been on a wild ride ever since!!

After graduating, I worked for the summer at Wanapum Dam in SE Washington while Ryan worked an alfalfa farm close by. Then we returned to Boise where he worked in a machine shop and I worked for Micron Electronics (now MPC). I started in customer service, became an rma coordinator, then inventory supervisor for their retail store, and then moved to IT where I loved it!! The most exciting claim to fame I have is assisting our security department with a sting operation at one of our retail locations. I got to help an FBI agent bust the bad guy!! It was pretty cool. I worked there until '99 when I quit to stay home and open an in-home daycare.

At the same time, my husband quit his job and opened his own machine shop which he is still a partner in today! You can check out his websites at PreciseInnovationsLLC.com and MetadyneIndustries.com. He's currently working for an aerospace company here in Ogden while on nights and weekends continuing to help with his shop in Boise. We are planning on moving back to Boise someday - maybe sooner than later. We'll see.

My daycare days didn't last due to complications in my third pregnancy. We have three beautiful children - a girl and two boys. I've continued to stay home helping Ryan with his shop and the several businesses it includes. I currently substitute on occasion and have volunteered to teach music at our elementary school. Our school district doesn't have music teachers for the elementary schools so our principal was kind enough to let me come in once a week and sing with the kids. It's so much fun!!

I was also very excited to be certified this summer with our dog Oreo as a therapy team and a READ team. That means that we are certified to enter nursing homes, hospitals, etc. and visit patients. The READ program allows us to enter schools and libraries and read with children. We visit the hospital and attend a group therapy session in the psych dept, as well as visit patients in the psych dept and the physical therapy dept. It has been very rewarding to be a part of this kind of service. The patients miss their pets at home and really enjoy the visits. I'm really enjoying it and Oreo loves the attention!! We also visit the local elementary school where children who are below grade level in their reading, come and read to Oreo. Reading with a dog helps the children relax and makes their reading experience more enjoyable and less intimidating. We're loving it. If you want to learn more about animal therapy teams, you can visit therapyanimals.org.

I also just started my own blog for our family. I don't know how often I'll get around to updating it - after all, look how long it took me just to write a post for this one!! But if you'd like to see my very first post you can see it at burtonators.blogspot.com.

Thank you, Trent, for your hard work in tracking us down! I so enjoyed getting to know all of you that summer and it's fun getting reaquainted with you. I hope we can get in touch with everyone! I wish you all the best!! -Cheryl

I will stop bragging...

I love being a stay at home mom. We have three terrific sons. My husband and I have been happily married for almost 17 years. He is Plant Pathologist. I know, it's all mushy stuff, but it's true!

Thanks for getting us all connected Trent! Sorry it took me so long to post!

Another favorite family pastime is riding! I never pictured myself as a mother of three adventureous boys.

The county life is not good for dogs! This is our third dog in less than a year! This one lost his eye courtesy of our neighbor's golf swing. Our youngest son decided the dog needed an eye patch.

Ever notice how very few family pictures have everyone in them? The shark ate the photographer in this instance....

Snow fun being snowed in?

This picture is from the beginning of 2008, but I love it because we are having fun as a family.

Kara (and family)

Hi All! It's great to see what you've all been up to. I want to give a BIG thanks to Trent for putting this all together.

I am so sad to hear about Vicki - she was a really neat person.

The pictures are of my son, Kraig (III) and I; my son, daughter, Katy and I in an Ice Hotel in Bjorli, Norway; Katy and Kraig on their first day of school this year ("just take the picture, Mom"); Kraig surfing behind our boat; and my hubby, Kraig and Katy.

Lots of K's, I know. Kraig is actually a Jr, so our son is the 3rd. Kraig's whole family starts with K and since he married me - we decided to keep the tradition going.

In Memory of Vicki Eddings

This is the news I received from a classmate of hers named Tammy Barendregt:

Vickie passed away about 7 or 8 years ago. I took care of her on hospice. She had a brain tumor. Her story was that she was attending Art school back East and was engaged to get married and then was diagnosised with Cancer. When she started treatment, I guess the fiancee left because he couldn't handle her being sick. So she moved home and lasted for a couple of years before being completely filled with tumors in her brain and brain stem. She was so sweet and it really was hard for me to watch since we had grown up together. Her biggest struggle with her disease at the end was that she couldn't draw anymore. I am sure that sending something would be very appropriate, especially since we just had our class reunion and people have regrouped with their memories of classmates. I also think that her parents would appreciate the fact that someone still remembers Vickie. I think it will bring back a flood of memories that might be painful at first but they will enjoy it. Let me know if there is anything else I can do....thanks, Tam

Her dad and stepmom live in Rupert still. Their address is 141 West 335 South Rupert, Idaho 83350 and their phone number is 436-3678. The cool thing is that after she passed away the missionaries knocked on her parents door one day and they have joined the church and have gone through the Temple. Really awesome!! Hope that helps, thanks, Tam

Lynne!

Here some recent photos of me. One is just me in the lab, one is me pontificating about sustainable agriculture and soil microbiology at a field day, one is me with 3 of my heroes: John Doran, Wendell Berry, and Wes Jackson. “The Kiss” is me and my hubby last New Year’s eve. I’ve been relatively happily married over 16 years. No kids, 4 dogs, 2 cats, about a dozen chickens and most recently some ducks.

So I’m a soil microbiologist now. Here is my main website: http://css.wsu.edu/people/faculty/soils/lcbweb.html I administer a grants program of ~400K annual, work to better integrate agricultural research, outreach, and education at Washington State University with what producers really need, and run a posse of grad students with projects that all have something to do with improving agricultural sustainability through Organic or Biologically-Intensive methods. I am proud to have received recognition as an Outstanding Mentor at WSU each of the last 3 yrs.

My biggest news lately is that I spent 10 days in Jordan this summer. I was in a team of 4 WSU women (1 was a PhD student of mine from Lebanon) who met with 26 Iraqi women agricultural extension agents to provide training in sustainable agriculture and food safety. Overall, a truly amazing and fabulous trip. We met wonderful wonderful people among both the Jordanians and Iraqis. We were all surprised how close we became in a short time. As you might imagine, Iraqis are living in a tumultuous time and have much to share. Yet they generally like Americans. One Jordanian explained “Americans have the best hearts – sometimes too good. They always think they’re doing things for the right reasons.” http://www.wsutoday.wsu.edu/pages/publications.asp?Action=Detail&PublicationID=12744&PageID=&ReferrerCode=uggc%3A%2F%2Fjjj%2Ejfhgbqnl%2Ejfh%2Erqh%2Fcntrf%2Ffrnepu%2Enfc

More from Brock

I went to undergrad at the University of Virginia and Montana State University. I graduated with a bachelors in English Literature and a minor-equivalent in Filmmaking in 1992. Then I attended Stanford Law School and graduated with a JD in 1996. By this time I already had two great kids who were 8 years old (my daughter) and 6 (my son). I joined a law firm in Bozeman then after 18 months I hung my own shingle and practiced a total of 10 years in criminal, family, and youth law. In 2004 my family and I moved to South Korea to give the kids an overseas experience. I taught law part time at Pyongtaek University. In 2006 we moved to Vicenza, Italy. My wife and I split up in Spring 2008. My kids are both in college and I'm studying for a Masters in Human Rights and Democratisation in Venice, Italy.

Pictures from Cheryl!

Cheryl found the treasure trove of pics! I'm a little scared by Ty's skinny tie and my huge 'fro, but besides that, we look pretty normal.

Not Something I Ever Wanted to Find

It never crossed my mind that any of us might not be around. I know that we were all busy with our lives, but I feel truly horrible that I never even knew.

Here's to you, Vicki!

The Infamous List!

It's a little stained and time-worn, but I finally managed to locate the list of us all. Now nothing can stop me!!

Still wondering when I became an adult . . .

Fortunately, I don't have kids, so I can pretty much fake it most of the time, but as of Friday, I do have a new mortgage. I'm just mystified about where the past 21 years went.

Here's a brief chronological history of everything that has happened to me since the summer of 1987.

Went to the University of Idaho and had a great time. Made some great friends, partied a bit, got bad grades (in fact, they lost me a job offer a couple of years ago), did a bunch of community service, dated a cute but clueless guy for a year, worked for housing as an RA and AC and RHA Adviser and finally got married to a much less clueless guy a week after graduation in 1992.

I got a degree in Journalism and still love to write, although I'm still searching for the story I can actually finish. Since I'd grown accustomed to eating, I got a job selling dresses at the Bon Marche and discovered that I was actually pretty good at it and making more money than an entry level journalism position in Idaho. So 16 years later, that's what I'm still doing, though I moved from selling to buying after I got my Masters degree in marketing in 1997 (where I got good grades. Redemption! :)).

After graduation Rob and I stayed in Moscow for a year until he got a position at Seattle University. We lived on campus there for 4 1/2 years. Living in downtown Seattle was great, but eventually Rob decided he needed a real job. We were both armed with Masters degrees, so we headed to Detroit so Rob could work with his college roommate at a small software development firm. He continues to have a charmed work life, but this is about me, not about him. :)

I went to work for a small retailer called 1/2 Off Card Shop, who went bankrupt about 2 and a half years after I started there. Then I got a position in the seasonal department (I've bought everything from Easter grass to Halloween costumes to Christmas trees. Even those tacky inflatable things.) at Kmart which turned out to be a blessing and a curse. The work was brutal, I also survived their bankruptcy while my friends and colleagues were getting let go left and right. But I learned so much and got to travel to Hong Kong and China and really did love the work.

When Kmart and Sears merged in 2005, we moved from the Detroit suburbs to the Chicago suburbs. I thought I was going to love Chicago, and I did (and do) but I lived 40 miles and basically a world away from downtown Chicago. My work life got worse and worse so last January, I started the processes of GETTING THE HELL OUT. I got a message from HR at Garden Ridge in Houston and had been hearing about their impressive seasonal department from vendors for years. So in March, I packed my bags, we put our expensive Illinois house on the market and I headed south. A couple of months later, the house sold and on Friday, I bought a new place in Katy, TX. Get this, my mortgage went from 30 years to 15 and my payment is LESS.

It's a lot like Idaho in Texas. Except it's a jillion degrees. But, the people are nice, and there are a lot of pickups.

My life hasn't been all work, but I must admit that since we don't have kids, I'm probably more defined by my job than I should be. And it's actually fine, I do like the work. I've met so many truly wonderful people, it's been very enriching.

And I've done some fun stuff, too.

Big vacations included London, Cancun and Alaska.

Little vacations mostly indulge whatever my current obsession happens to be. I went through a stint in the late '90s/early 00's when I couldn't get enough of the band Barenaked Ladies. I think we saw them live more than 50 times in locations including North Bay Ontario (in February. My Canadian friends told me that Canadians don't even go to North Bay in February), Charlotte, Chicago, Grand Rapids, Columbus, Toronto, and Detroit, the best trip was the 4 cities in 4 nights surrounding New Years Eve 2002.

I also have a minor baseball obsession, we're not close to having hit all the major league parks, but we've been to both the Kingdome and Safeco in Seattle, Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park in Detroit, Oakland, San Francisco, LA Angels, St. Louis, Wrigley and the Cell in Chicago, Minute Maid in Houston, Miller in Milwaukee and we have plans this summer to go to Yankee Stadium and Cooperstown.

We have a great 6 year old Labrador (Ellie) who was an awful puppy. We got pretty involved in dog training for the Michigan Humane Society while we were there and I'd like to get involved again. Houston has a very strong dog community and we're going to look into adopting a puppy when we get back from New York.

We also have 2 cute kitties, one is a tiny grey tabby named Page (she'll be 9 in November) and the other is a fluffy tuxedo kitty named Stewart (who will be 8 on 8/8/08!!). Both named after members of the band Barenaked Ladies. I just read in Entertainment Weekly that Steven Page (who we obviously named Page after) was arrested in New York a few weeks ago on cocaine charges. Great, I've named my cat after a criminal. I'm a bit freaked out and have been listening to BNL for the last several hours. Yes, I'm often disturbed by things that don't really affect me.

This being an adult thing can be very tricky at times.
Hope you are all well and I look forward to hearing about your adventures since ISU. And I apologize for not having even 1/4 of the exciting tales that Brock has, but a post that 5 times as long. I'm obviously much more into the writing than the editing. . . .

Guess I'll Go First

After Pokie, I went to U of I, where I made a lot of enemies, got hitched to Cecile, picked up smoking, and graduated with my BA in English. That's pretty much my college life in a nutshell, just without the alcohol, minimum wage jobs, and bad movies.

After graduation, Cec and I ran to Boise before they could take the diplomas back and found ourselves among the many poor and jobless in Boise in 1992. Cec got a job working at a TV station and at a linen store and I worked at a video store and tried my hand at writing.
Time passed.

Cecile went to work for Qwest and I started life over again as a technical writer, after I found out that people actually paid people to be snotty to them and to sleep at their desks. It was like I was born anew. I promptly gained 30 pounds from sitting all the time and began to think often about how many office supplies I could steal each day without getting caught.

My daughter, Zoe, was born in 2000. She was 2 months premature, so she gave us a good scare. I think it's just her way of prepping me for the training bra and pierced nose stages to come. Noah followed in 2003, and that was that. We now have our matched set and when the stars align, they will claim Islamabad as their own!

Ok, I'm done.

OK. How This Works...

What I was thinking would be easiest would be for everyone to send me their bios and I will post them. Sound good? OK. Let the waters of your life flow over me.

Nevermind.

That doesn't sound sanitary. Better just email me a condensed version of the past 2 decades. Try to make it as juicy as possible, but remember that I checked the little "No Naughty Bits" box when I signed the agreement and told the little wrinkle dwarf what time the kids next door come home so he can spirit them away.

Anyway, here, for no reason whatsoever, is a jumble of items that spirit me back to that summer of '87:

Do these things mean anything to anyone else but me? Am I the only one who wakes up in a cold sweat trying to remember the name of the blonde waitress or the order of the philosophers of ancient Greece?

Heya and Welcome

Hi guys. I can't believe that it has actually been 21 years! I think I must have pulled a David Bowie and drank too much or inhaled some Sweet and Low or something, since it seems like I missed about 18 of those years. I think that I need to speak with someone about a refund...

Anyway, hopefully this will work and we can all post, enjoy, laugh, and then run away and hide for another 21 years. Maybe by then I'll be prepared and have something planned. Probably not, though, as I'm guessing that as more of my brain cells start passing into the great void, I'll probably start making less and less sense...and then eventually buy an RV and head down South to watch NASCAR and park overnight in exotic Walmart parking lots along the Border.

Ah, but to dream...
